St Helena Bay is more than just a pin on a map; it’s a sprawling, crescent-shaped bay on the West Coast, famed for its calm waters, rich marine life, and unfiltered tranquillity. While many visitors are drawn to the bustle of nearby Paternoster, St Helena Bay remains a hidden gem for those in the know.
As locals based in the beautiful Shelley Point estate, we’ve explored every corner of this area. To help you plan your next getaway, we’ve put together our top 10 list of unforgettable things to see and do.

Our Top 10 St Helena Bay Experiences
1. Tee Off at the Shelley Point Golf Club You don’t have to be staying in the estate to enjoy this beautiful 9-hole links-style course. It offers a challenge for seasoned golfers and a stunning walk for casual players, with lush greens set against the rugged coastal landscape.
2. Explore the Beaches of Shelley Point Shelley Point itself is a private peninsula with three of its own beaches. Our favourite is Stompneusbaai, a postcard-perfect cove with calm, clear water and iconic granite boulders. It’s ideal for swimming, sunbathing, or launching a kayak.
3. Discover the Vasco da Gama Monument Just a short walk from The Starling, this national monument marks the spot where the Portuguese explorer first set foot on South African soil in 1497. It’s not just a piece of history; it’s one of the best viewpoints in the bay for spotting dolphins and passing whales (in season).
4. Enjoy Fresh Fish at Oppikaai For an authentic West Coast experience, head to the St Helena Bay harbour and grab a table at Oppikaai Restaurant. Situated right on the commercial fishing quay, you can enjoy incredible calamari or hake and chips while watching the colourful fishing boats come and go.
5. Take a Day Trip to Paternoster Just a 20-minute drive away, the famous white-washed fishing village of Paternoster is a must-do. Browse the quaint art shops, have lunch at a world-class restaurant like The Noisy Oyster, or take a photo at the iconic red-and-white Tietiesbaai lighthouse.
6. Watch the Sunset from Golden Mile Beach This aptly named beach is a 4.5km stretch of pristine white sand. It’s the perfect spot for a long, uninterrupted walk or a classic West Coast sundowner. Because of the bay’s unique North-facing direction, the sunsets are truly spectacular.
7. Go Sea Kayaking The waters of St Helena Bay are famously calm, making it one of the best and safest places on the coast for sea kayaking. Rent one and explore the shoreline, keeping an eye out for Heaviside’s dolphins, seals, and huge flocks of cormorants.
8. See the “Bokkom Laan” in Velddrif About a 25-minute drive away is the unique town of Velddrif, home to “Bokkom Laan.” This dirt road along the Berg River is the heart of the bokkom (salted and dried mullet) industry. It feels like stepping back in time and is a paradise for bird-watchers.
9. Spot Whales and Dolphins St Helena Bay is a vital nursery for Southern Right Whales (from August to November) and is home to a resident population of Heaviside’s dolphins, which can be seen playing in the surf almost all year round.
10. Do Nothing… in Absolute Comfort Sometimes the best activity on a West Coast getaway is no activity. The region is for unwinding. Sleep in late, read a good book, pour a glass of local wine, and light the fire for a braai as the sun goes down.
